A lot of history seems to get mixed with mythology, politics, and symbolism, making it hard for people to get their bearings. Controllers of these stories have power.
Oh it's much more nefarious, I believe. All the stories of how people successfully stood up to empires, and the spiritual beliefs that empowered them, have been turned upside-down to make the heroes into villains and the villains into heroes. The 'truth that would set us free' has been twisted so it keeps us believing that God supports the empire, it's always one empire against another, and there's no other way.
I agree with Douglas that there's an indigenous tradition that's been buried in lies, but also the history of Western cultures and revolts that took down empires, and their alternative economic, political and spiritual practices. We all come from indigenous stock and without the subversion of our histories through Judeo-Christian propaganda, the last 2000 years may have gone differently.
